The story of Natural Impacts Ltd. is one of the right person being in the right place at the right time!
That ‘right’ person was Dr Roger White who had over 15 years of experience working in the dynamic impact field as a Senior Scientist for the MoD. He was in the ‘right’ place at the centre of aviation research in Farnborough, South-East England when the opportunity arose to re-open a ‘bird-gun’ facility. The timing was also ‘right’ (it was 2003) as there was an increasing need for mechanical data to support dynamic computer modelling.
Since its humble beginnings Natural Impacts has gone from strength to strength, expanding its capability to now include seven state-of-the-art gas gun from 3mm to 8″ (203mm) bore plus quasi-static and high-rate tension, compression and shear Hopkinson bars. This equipment is used in conjunction with a suite of high-speed instrumentation including video cameras (up to 200,000fps), dynamic load cells, strain gauges (40 channels @ 1MHz), laser displacement sensors (300KHz), temperature loggers (contact and IR) and pressure transducers.
The facilities are supported by an extensive on-site workshop with full machining capability, turning, milling, drilling, sawing etc… plus a fabrication shop with MMA, TIG, MIG, Oxy-Acetaline, rolling and pressing.
Natural Impacts was founded on a simple ethos – to provide an accurate, cost effective, responsive and wide-ranging bespoke service. We have performed over 30,000 impact tests at targets as diverse as missiles to bullet trains, jet engine turbine casings to telegraph poles. Along the way we have developed a number of novel techniques and designed and manufactured unique testing equipment to generate previously unobtainable mechanical data.
Our experience is second-to-none so please feel free to contact us to discuss your needs whatever the size or scope of your project.
